Apple Hill Hospital is a distinguished provider of inpatient mental health rehabilitation services, offering a range of care pathways designed to support individuals with complex mental health conditions. Our comprehensive care model provides acute care, crisis resolution, urgent care, and mental health rehabilitation, all within the framework of the highest clinical standards. Whether individuals are referred by Acute Services, Secure Services or community health providers, or come to us voluntarily, we are committed to their recovery and long-term well-being.
The focus of our services is to provide the best care possible for individuals who are in need of medium and low-secure care. We create an environment where they can safely receive the care they need to regain control over their lives, improve their quality of life, and reintegrate into society when appropriate.
Who do we treat
We provide treatment for men and women who may or may not be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 and are experiencing severe mental illness.
Our services are designed to support patients who may require ongoing psychiatric rehabilitation, ensuring a safe and structured environment for treatment and rehabilitation. Patients may be referred from the Acute services, Secure services or other mental health care pathways. We offer tailored care plans to address everyone’s unique needs, focusing on recovery and long-term well-being.
Our Facilities
Apple Hill Hospital features three dedicated acute mental health wards, offering a total of 32 individual bedrooms. The hospital recently completed a significant extension of its facilities, and these new modern and purpose-built wards have greatly enhanced the hospital’s ability to provide outstanding care to its patients.
The new acute ward facilities include:
- ✅ Windsor ward 11 bedded female acute mental health ward
- ✅ Eton ward 11 bedded male inpatient mental health rehabilitation ward
- ✅ Ascot ward 9 bedded male acute mental health ward
The hospital offers single-sex accommodation to provide a safe and supportive environment for all patients. They understand the importance of privacy and personal space. That’s why each individual bedroom in the hospital comes with en-suite facilities. These facilities include a toilet and washing/shower facilities, allowing you to maintain your comfort and dignity throughout your stay.

Acute Care Services
Our Acute care unit is designed to address the immediate needs of individuals who are experiencing critical mental health crises. This level of care is critical for stabilising patients and managing any acute symptoms that may be placing their health, or the safety of those around them, at risk.
Acute care involves intense, round-the-clock monitoring and treatment by our skilled team of psychiatrists, mental health nurses, and healthcare assistants. Our secure environment ensures that patients receive the support they need in a safe, structured setting. Treatments may include medication management, therapeutic interventions, and behavioural therapies, all aimed at stabilising the individual and preparing them for the next stage of their care.
Acute care often acts as the initial phase of a longer treatment plan, helping patients transition to less intensive forms of care once they are stable. This step-down approach is essential for gradual rehabilitation and ensures that patients are not overwhelmed as they move through their recovery journey.
Crisis Resolution and Crisis Care
We provide dedicated crisis resolution services designed to support individuals who are in immediate distress. These services are aimed at preventing the need for hospital admission by offering rapid interventions that stabilise patients in crisis.
Crisis resolution teams work closely with patients, families, and community mental health services to deliver urgent care and stabilisation. The goal is to de-escalate the situation and provide the patient with the support they need to avoid more severe interventions. This can involve short-term intensive support in a secure environment, medication adjustments, or the implementation of coping strategies to help the individual manage their symptoms more effectively.
For those requiring inpatient care, our crisis care services ensure a seamless transition into a secure, supportive environment where they can receive the treatment and therapy necessary for their recovery. Patients benefit from personalised care plans that are tailored to their specific needs, ensuring a holistic approach to their mental health challenges.
Immediate Care and Urgent Care
We understand that mental health crises often occur without warning, and immediate care is essential to address the urgency of these situations. Our immediate and urgent care services provide patients with access to professional mental health support as soon as possible.
Immediate care services are typically accessed by individuals experiencing a sudden deterioration in their mental health, such as suicidal ideation, severe psychotic episodes, or extreme anxiety. Urgent care services are also available for those who require rapid intervention but may not need full hospitalisation. Both services offer a vital lifeline for patients and their families, ensuring that help is always available when it is needed most.
Our secure facilities are staffed by mental health professionals trained to assess and manage acute mental health crises, providing patients with the care and compassion they need during their most vulnerable moments. We are equipped to handle a wide range of mental health conditions, from mood disorders to complex trauma, ensuring that every patient receives the support they need in a timely manner.
Inpatient Mental Health Rehabilitation
Mental health rehabilitation is a core component of our care pathway. Rehabilitation focuses on helping patients develop the skills, resilience, and coping mechanisms necessary to manage their mental health challenges and lead fulfilling lives. Our rehabilitation services are available to men and women who may or may not be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983 and have a severe mental illness.
The rehabilitation process is highly personalised, with each patient receiving a unique care plan that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. Through our “My Shared Pathway” initiative, patients are empowered to take an active role in their recovery journey. This person-centred approach allows patients to set their own goals, understand their treatment options, and actively participate in decisions about their care.
Our mental health rehabilitation services include a wide range of therapeutic interventions, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), occupational therapy, art therapy, and group therapy. These therapies are designed to help patients develop practical skills that they can use in their daily lives, as well as foster a sense of self-worth and independence.
Holistic Approach to Mental Health Rehabilitation
We believe in a holistic approach to rehabilitation. This means addressing not only the mental health symptoms but also the physical, social, and emotional needs of each patient. We offer a variety of activities and programmes aimed at improving the overall quality of life for our patients, including work opportunities, workshops, and arts-based therapies.
We also recognise the importance of physical health in the rehabilitation process. Our secure facilities include gyms, outdoor spaces, and physical health services that encourage patients to stay active and engaged. Physical activity has been shown to improve mental health outcomes, and we integrate it into our rehabilitation programmes whenever possible.
In addition to individual therapies, we also place a strong emphasis on social integration and community involvement. Patients have the opportunity to participate in social activities, volunteer work, and educational programmes that help them develop a sense of purpose and belonging. These experiences are invaluable for building confidence and preparing patients for a successful transition back into the community.
Step-down Pathway
For patients who are ready to transition out of secure care, we provide a step-down pathway. This is an essential part of the rehabilitation process, offering patients a gradual transition from the highly structured environment of secure care to less intensive forms of support. The step-down pathway helps to ensure that patients are not overwhelmed by the sudden shift in their care environment and are fully prepared for life outside of the hospital.
Patients in the step-down phase continue to receive the support and treatment they need, but with greater independence and freedom. This allows them to practise the skills they have learned during their rehabilitation in a more relaxed setting. Our step-down facilities are located across the country, providing patients with a safe and supportive environment as they progress in their recovery journey.
Specialised Care for Men and Women
We are proud to offer gender-specific care for men and women with severe mental health conditions. We recognise that men and women often have different needs when it comes to mental health treatment, and our services are tailored accordingly.
Our services focus on addressing issues such as anger management, substance abuse, antisocial behaviour, trauma, abuse, and complex emotional disorders. Our care ensures that all patients receive the treatment and support that is most appropriate for their unique needs.
Both men and women benefit from our secure care services, which provide a safe environment in which they can focus on their recovery. Our multidisciplinary teams work closely with each patient to develop a care plan that meets their individual needs, ensuring the best possible outcomes for their mental health and well-being.

Commitment to Excellence
At Apple Hill Hospital, we believe that recovery is not just about managing symptoms but about helping individuals regain control of their lives. Our recovery-oriented approach to care is based on the principles of hope, empowerment, and personal responsibility. We encourage patients to take an active role in their treatment and to set goals that are meaningful to them.
Our recovery networks provide patients with the opportunity to connect with others who are on a similar journey. These networks offer peer support, guidance, and encouragement, helping patients build relationships and develop a sense of community. We also offer real work opportunities, allowing patients to gain valuable skills and experience that will help them reintegrate into society once they have completed their treatment.
The focus on the arts is another important aspect of our recovery-oriented care. We believe that creative expression is a powerful tool for healing, and we offer a wide range of arts-based therapies, including music, painting, and drama. These therapies provide patients with an outlet for their emotions and a way to express themselves in a non-verbal manner.
Commitment to Excellence
Our commitment to excellence extends to every aspect of our care pathway, from acute care and crisis resolution to mental health rehabilitation and step-down services. We believe that every patient deserves the best possible care, and we work tirelessly to ensure that our services reflect the latest evidence-based practices and clinical guidelines.
