At Apple Hill Hospital, we understand the importance of secure services in supporting individuals with severe mental illnesses. Our Secure Services offer a comprehensive and compassionate care pathway for both men and women who require medium and low secure care. We aim to provide the highest quality of treatment and rehabilitation, ensuring a safe, structured, and supportive environment that promotes recovery and helps individuals reintegrate into society when appropriate.
We take pride in being more than just a hospital – we are a place of hope and healing. Our team of dedicated professionals is committed to delivering personalised care that respects the dignity and individuality of each patient. We recognise that recovery is a personal journey, and we work closely with our patients to help them achieve their full potential.
Our Approach to Secure Services
At Apple Hill Hospital, our secure services are designed to meet the complex needs of individuals experiencing severe mental illness. Our approach is holistic and patient-centred, ensuring that each individual receives the care and support they need to recover and live a meaningful life.
Medium and Low Secure Care
We provide both medium and low secure care for individuals who may exhibit dangerous or challenging behaviours as a result of their mental illness. Our secure environments are designed to ensure the safety of both patients and staff, while still promoting a therapeutic and rehabilitative atmosphere. Patients may also be referred to us from the Prison Service, where they may have been identified as requiring specialist mental health care.
Medium secure care offers a higher level of security and supervision for patients who pose a greater risk to themselves or others, while low secure care provides a more flexible and less restrictive environment for individuals who are making progress in their recovery. Both levels of care are tailored to the specific needs of each patient, with the goal of helping them transition to less restrictive settings as they progress in their treatment.
Personalised Care Plans: My Shared Pathway
We believe that every patient’s recovery journey is unique, and we are committed to providing personalised care plans that reflect the individual needs, goals, and aspirations of each person. Through our innovative My Shared Pathway programme, we work collaboratively with patients to develop a bespoke care plan that outlines their treatment goals, progress, and future aspirations.
My Shared Pathway ensures that patients are actively involved in their own care, empowering them to take ownership of their recovery. By setting clear goals and regularly reviewing progress, we help patients stay focused and motivated as they work towards achieving a better quality of life. This collaborative approach fosters a sense of partnership between patients and their care team, promoting greater engagement and satisfaction with the treatment process.

Holistic Rehabilitation Services
Rehabilitation is a key component of our secure services, and we offer a range of therapeutic activities and programmes designed to support patients in their recovery journey. Our rehabilitation services are focused on helping individuals develop the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to reintegrate into the community and live fulfilling lives.
Our rehabilitation programmes include:
- ✅ Real Work Opportunities: We recognise the importance of meaningful work in the recovery process. Through our vocational programmes, patients have the opportunity to engage in real work experiences that help them build practical skills and gain a sense of accomplishment. These opportunities not only boost self-esteem but also prepare patients for future employment or educational pursuits.
- ✅ Workshops and Skill-Building Activities: In addition to vocational programmes, we offer a variety of workshops and activities that help patients develop essential life skills. These workshops cover a range of topics, from financial management and communication skills to personal care and social interactions. By providing patients with the tools they need to navigate daily life, we support their transition back into the community.
- ✅ Creative and Therapeutic Arts: We believe in the transformative power of the arts. Our secure services include a strong focus on creative therapies, such as art, music, and drama therapy, which provide patients with a safe and expressive outlet for their emotions. These therapies are not only enjoyable but also play a crucial role in promoting emotional well-being and self-awareness.
Stepdown Pathways
As patients make progress in their recovery, they may transition to less secure environments as part of our stepdown pathways. This graduated approach to care ensures that patients are able to move towards greater independence in a safe and supportive manner. Our stepdown services include:
Low Secure Units
For patients who have made significant progress in medium secure care, our low secure units offer a less restrictive environment where they can continue their rehabilitation with a greater degree of autonomy. This stepdown service is designed to help patients gradually transition from secure care to community living.
Community Rehabilitation Services
Our community rehabilitation services provide ongoing support for patients who are ready to leave secure care but still require some level of supervision and assistance. These services help patients reintegrate into society while maintaining a focus on their mental health and well-being.
By offering a continuum of care that supports patients at every stage of their recovery, we ensure that they are well-prepared for life outside of a secure environment.
Commitment to Quality Care
At Apple Hill Hospital, we are dedicated to delivering the highest standards of care and treatment. We are proud members of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Peer Review Network, which allows us to benchmark our services against national standards and continuously improve the quality of care we provide. We strive to exceed these standards wherever possible, ensuring that our patients receive the best possible treatment in a safe and supportive environment.
Our commitment to quality care is reflected in our multidisciplinary team approach. Our secure services are staffed by a team of highly trained professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, and occupational therapists. This diverse team works collaboratively to provide comprehensive and coordinated care that addresses the full range of physical, emotional, and social needs of our patients.
Who We Treat
Apple Hill Hospital’s secure services are designed to support men and women who are experiencing severe mental illness and may exhibit challenging or dangerous behaviours as a result. Some of our patients may be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, while others may be referred to us from the Prison Service or other healthcare providers.
We treat individuals with a wide range of mental health conditions, including:
- ✅ Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorders: These serious mental health conditions often cause individuals to experience hallucinations, delusions, and disorganised thinking, which can lead to challenging behaviour and a need for secure care.
- ✅ Bipolar Disorder: Individuals with bipolar disorder may experience extreme mood swings, ranging from depressive episodes to manic episodes. In some cases, these mood changes can result in behaviour that requires a secure environment.
- ✅ Personality Disorders: Some personality disorders, such as borderline personality disorder or antisocial personality disorder, may cause individuals to engage in risky or harmful behaviour that necessitates secure care.
- ✅ Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Individuals who have experienced trauma may develop PTSD, which can lead to flashbacks, nightmares, and hypervigilance. In some cases, these symptoms can cause challenging behaviours that require specialised care.
- ✅ Dual Diagnosis: We also treat individuals with a dual diagnosis, meaning they have both a mental health condition and a substance misuse problem. These individuals often require a higher level of care due to the complexity of their conditions.
Our secure services are tailored to meet the unique needs of each patient, with a focus on helping them manage their mental health, reduce challenging behaviours, and work towards recovery.
